Andrew and Michelle Tate of Indianapolis & West Lafayette Indiana, are professional Latin and Ballroom (Ten Dance) DanceSport competitors. They were selected as USA DanceSport representatives to the 2005 World Games, and were the 2003 United States Amateur National Ten Dance Champions. Ten Dance is the decathlon of dancesport, combining 5 Latin dances – cha cha, samba, rumba, paso doble, jive – and 5 Standard (or ballroom) dances – slow waltz, tango, foxtrot, Viennese waltz and quickstep. In 2005, the Tates advanced from the amateur to professional division and opened their studio, Tates’ Dance Center, on the northwest side of Indianapolis. Andrew and Michelle coach members of the Indiana University Ballroom Dance Club, the University of Illinois Dancesport Competition team, and the Butler Ballroom Dance Club; they run the only youth dancesport program in Indianapolis; and they are popular entertainers and teachers, regularly performing shows and teaching group classes, workshops, and private lessons. Andrew and Michelle began dancing together in 1997. The pair met through the ballroom dance club at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where Andrew completed his Ph.D. in Neuroscience, and Michelle earned her M.B.A. In a few short years, they established themselves as both World Class and Elite Championship DanceSport Athletes. As professional dancers, they have attained Member level certification for Teaching/Judging with the North American Dance Teachers Assocition. Currently, Andrew works for Purdue University as an IT consultant; Michelle manages Tates' Dance Center. |
